About Us

The Shillelagh and District Hunt Branch of the Irish Pony Club was founded in 1964 and covers an area of South Wicklow/North Wexford and the north east tip of Carlow. We are a very active branch of the Irish Pony Club and currently have about 120 members.
The Irish Pony Club is the main equestrian organisation that provides training in all disciplines of equestrian activities in this Country for members up to the age of 23.
The objectives of the Irish Pony Club are the same today as they were when the Pony Club was first established and they are as follows:

  • To encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with ponies and riding.
  • To give instruction in riding and horsemanship and to educate members to look after and to take proper care of their animals.
  • To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, and to create strength of character and self discipline.

Activities in our branch include:

  • Dressage
  • Showjumping
  • Cross Country
  • One Day Events
  • Mounted Games
  • Tetrathlon
  • Minimus
  • Childrens Hunts
  • Fun Days
  • Rallies
  • Polo
  • Unmounted Rallies

and the highlight of the year for many of our members, the Annual Camp held every year in July.

The Pony Club encourages young people to ride and to enjoy all sports connected with horses and riding. It also gives instruction, at all levels in riding and looking after a pony. When members represent their branch in competition, they learn about sportsmanship, loyalty and self-discipline while having lots of fun! We also run many activities for the less competitive rider.
